Adjusting Subscriptions to Forums

By default, your forum subscription settings will sign you up to email notifications every time you post in a forum. This can be a little overwhelming, especially if you are an instructor in a course, to receive an email for EVERY post. Here are a few ways to adjust your settings.
  1. Make adjustments at the profile level. Once you log on to Moodle, select the arrow next to your name in the top right corner of the screen. Select “preferences”.

  1. Depending on your role in Moodle, i.e.) instructor, student, administrator, your screen may look a bit different than the following example. You are wanting to select “Forum Preferences” listed under “User Account”.

  2. You have three different settings that can be adjusted. The first is email digest type. If you subscribe to forums, you can choose how often you are emailed. If you want to receive notifications, but prefer all in one email, you could subscribe to a Digest.

  3. The second preference is the auto-subscribe. This, by default, is set to No. If you want to automatically subscribe to forum discussions, you will want to set this to Yes.
  4. Lastly, forum tracking allows “new posts” to be highlighted in a forum. So when visiting the class page and/or forum, you will see an indicator of how many posts are in the forum that you have not read yet.

  5. Once making all adjustments, select save changes.

Subscription Options When Creating a Post

  1. When creating a forum post, or reply, you have the option to subscribe to that forum. By default, it will be checked to subscribe unless you change your profile preferences as described in the steps above. If you do NOT want to be subscribed to that post, make sure that the subscription box is unchecked.

  2. You also have two ways of verifying/modifying your subscription status at the forum level. On the main forum page, you can check the symbol at the end of a post. If a small dot is showing, you are not subscribed. If an envelope appears, you are subscribed. You can change the subscription by clicking the icon until it shows the one you prefer. When in doubt, hover your mouse over the icon and it will give you a text prompt for what the symbol means.

  3. Last, but not least, if you wish to subscribe/unsubscribe from an entire forum, you can do so by clicking the gear icon for that forum and selecting Don't track unread posts. *Please note, if an instructor has selected a forced subscription for a forum, you are unable to remove your subscription to those updates.
