What Panopto Student Submission Integration Does

When Panopto is used inside Moodle:

✔ Students can submit:

  • Uploaded video files

  • Panopto recordings made from their device

  • Edited videos stored in their “My Folder” or assignment folder

✔ Moodle automatically creates a secure assignment folder for submissions.

✔ Faculty can:

  • View student videos directly inside Moodle

  • Provide feedback in Moodle

  • Grade the submission

  • Allow resubmissions or multiple attempts

✔ Students do not need to share links—they simply submit through Moodle and permissions are handled automatically.

Setting Up a Panopto Student Submission Assignment in Moodle

You must create a Moodle Assignment and enable Panopto as the submission type.

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Go to your Moodle course.

  2. Turn Editing On.

  3. Click Add an activity or resource.

  4. Select Assignment.

  5. Give the assignment a name and description.

  6. Scroll to Submission Types.

  7. Check the box labeled Panopto Student Submission

    • You can leave other submission types unchecked if this is a video-only assignment.

  8. Adjust any other assignment settings (due dates, grade, attempts, etc.).

  9. Click Save and return to course.

What Happens Automatically

When you enable Panopto Student Submission:

  • A Panopto Assignment Folder is created under your course’s Panopto folder.

  • Students get permission to upload/record videos ONLY to that folder.

  • Their submission is tied to their Moodle attempt—no additional permissions are needed.

Understanding the Panopto Assignment Folder

Each assignment folder is:

  • Secure – students can only see their own videos.

  • Temporary – content moves to your main folder after grading if you choose.

  • Linked directly to Moodle – removing or renaming it can break submissions.

Folder Naming Convention

Panopto creates:
CourseName – Assignment – [Assignment Name]

You may view it in Panopto under:
Browse → Course Folder → Assignment Folder

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

Issue: Student says they cannot upload a video

Possible causes:

  • Submission attempts are closed or locked.

  • The assignment folder wasn’t created (rare).

  • Student is uploading a very large file; instruct them to wait for processing.

Issue: The Panopto player doesn’t appear

Try:

  • Refreshing the page.

  • Ensuring Panopto is enabled in submission types.

  • Verifying that the assignment is not hidden.

Issue: You don’t see any videos in Panopto

  • Check the assignment folder under your course folder.

  • Students may have saved their submission as a draft instead of submitting.

Issue: Student submitted the wrong video

  • Allow another attempt
    OR

  • Reset the attempt under View/Grade all submissions.

Best Practices for Faculty

✔ Include Clear Submission Instructions

Explain:

  • How to upload

  • Required video length or format

  • Whether editing is allowed

✔ Allow Multiple Attempts (Optional)

Useful for technical or first-time Panopto users.

✔ Ask Students to Submit Early

Video processing can take several minutes.

✔ Consider Using Rubrics

Grade transparency increases for video-based assignments.

✔ Check Storage Settings Periodically

Assignment folders with many long videos can grow large.
