Some assignments in your course may require you to submit a video—for example, a presentation, demonstration, speech, or reflection. Your instructor may use Panopto, a video platform directly integrated into Moodle, to collect these submissions.
This guide walks you through how Panopto Student Submissions work and how to successfully upload or record your video for an assignment.
What Is Panopto Student Submission?
Panopto is a video tool your instructor uses for watching, recording, and sharing videos. When it’s used for assignments:
✔ You upload or record your video directly inside Moodle
✔ Moodle creates the correct folder automatically
✔ You do not need to send a link or email anything
✔ Your instructor automatically gets access to your video
✔ You cannot see anyone else’s submission
Before You Submit
✓ Make sure your video is ready
✓ Save it to your device (computer, tablet, or phone)
✓ Have a stable internet connection
✓ If recording directly in Panopto, allow your browser to use your camera & microphone
How to Submit Your Video in Moodle Using Panopto
Follow these steps exactly:
Step 1: Open the Assignment
Log in to Moodle.
Open your course.
Click the assignment that requires a video submission.
Read any instructions your instructor has added.
Step 2: Click “Add Submission”
You’ll see a section for Panopto Student Submission.
Click the Add submission button.
Step 3: Choose How You Want to Submit Your Video
You’ll see several options. Select one:
Option A: Upload a Video File (Most Common)
Click Upload Media.
Drag your video file into the upload box OR click Choose Files to browse your device.
Wait for the upload to finish (large files may take several minutes).
Click Insert after the upload completes.
Option B: Record a New Video (Browser Recorder)
If your instructor allows it:
Click Record.
Choose Panopto Capture or the built-in browser recorder.
Allow access to your camera and microphone.
Record your video.
When finished, click Stop, then Use Recording.
Wait for Panopto to process the video.
Click Insert.
Option C: Choose a Video from “My Folder” in Panopto
If you already uploaded or recorded your video in Panopto:
Click Choose.
Navigate to My Folder.
Select your video.
Click Insert.
Step 4: Submit the Assignment
Once your video appears as a thumbnail inside the submission box:
Scroll down.
Click Save changes.
If the assignment requires a final confirmation, click Submit assignment.
You should now see a confirmation message such as:
"Your submission has been successfully submitted."
Important Notes
✔ Your video may take a few minutes to process.
This is normal. You might see “Processing” or “Unavailable” at first.
✔ Do not delete your video from Panopto.
If you remove it from your Panopto folder, your submission may break.
✔ You cannot view anyone else’s submission.
All submissions are private between you and your instructor.
✔ File size is not usually a problem.
Panopto can handle very large videos, but upload speed depends on your internet.
How to Confirm Your Submission
After submitting:
Return to the assignment page.
Look for:
A video preview
A timestamp of your submission
A status message like Submitted for grading
If you don’t see these, contact your instructor immediately.
Resubmitting a Video (If Allowed)
Your instructor may allow multiple attempts.
If so:
Reopen the assignment.
Click Edit submission.
Upload or record your new video.
Click Submit assignment again.
If resubmissions are not enabled, you will not be able to change your video after submitting.
Troubleshooting & Common Issues

Switching to a different browser (Chrome works best)

Checking your internet connection
Problem: Panopto keeps loading or processing
Wait several minutes
Do not close the page until upload is complete
Problem: I recorded in Panopto but don’t see it in the assignment
It may still be processing
Make sure you clicked Insert after selecting the video
Check “My Folder” in Panopto

Click Edit submission if allowed
If not, email your instructor immediately
Tips for Success
✔ Start your upload early—processing can take time
✔ Verify your video plays before submitting
✔ Use a computer rather than a phone if possible
✔ Keep a backup copy of your video
